Floridians along the Atlantic drift were adapting Friday to rising water as Hurricane Matthew splashed the state with rain and as solid winds pushed waves over shorelines.
Meteorologists said storm surge was measured at more than 4 feet in a few ranges.
"We are seeing effects at this moment from St. Augustine to Jacksonville Beach. Tragically, this is going to proceed as the night progressed," Gov. Rick Scott said.
The tempest, which is reprimanded for four passings in Florida, started streak surge concerns. The National Weather Service issued a notice for parts of Nassau County, north of Jacksonville.
"The mix of a hazardous tempest surge, the tide and huge and ruinous waves will bring about typically dry ranges close to the drift to be overwhelmed by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline," the National Hurricane Center said.
Extraordinary concern encompassed Jacksonville's St. Johns River, which could be overpowered by water pushed into it by the tempest. The sea tempest focus said a tide gage reported tempest surge of 4.28 feet.
